Private undersea cable ventures validate network growth trends

Liquid Telecom

Google may invest in a multi-million-dollar undersea cable across the Pacific Ocean that will help handle increasing amounts of undersea traffic being sent across private networks, according to The Wall Street Journal. Despite arguments about Net neutrality, privately owned undersea cables, for example, give the companies that own it more control over traffic prioritization long before it reaches consumers. Google’s potential move makes sense in terms of a recent TeleGeography Global Bandwidth Research Service report, which found that while international backbone operators are still the primary users of international bandwidth,…

Facebook & Google Move Up On Social Network Creep Index

Google and Facebook gave the anti-social networking crowd new ammunition as they made moves that kicked them up a notch on the social media creep index. Let’s put it this way: If you were looking for an excuse to give up on these companies, these recent announcements certainly don’t give you good reasons to reconsider staying. As I define it, the creep index is like the Defcon Warning System of social media. Instead of defining how close we are to nuclear war, it measures just how intrusive and creepy our…

5 things neither side of the broadband debate wants to admit

As I was editing my interview with Jeffrey Eisenach, the director of the American Enterprise Institute’s Center for Internet, Communications and Technology Policy, I had a sense of deja vu. Eisenach’s arguments were thoughtful and cogent. But they were eerily similar to those I encountered when I first started thinking about Internet regulation a decade ago. That’s puzzling because the Internet has changed rapidly. Over the last decade, we’ve gotten Netflix streaming, the iPhone, or FiOS. So why are ideologues on both sides of the broadband debate still making the…

ICT strategies as business differentiators

Information technology is fast becoming a primary driver of market differentiation. “In this context, the IT agenda is quickly extending outside of the realm of IT executives and into the agenda of the CEO, COO and CMO. It is clear that technology trends are changing the world as we know it, and business leaders who are able to grasp these trends and execute on their implementation will position themselves for future business success,” says Hans Zachar, senior manager of IT strategy at Accenture. In order to gain insight into the…

Brands set to lose ‘closed generic’ gTLDs

Scores of controversial brand-owned generic top-level domains (gTLDs) could be under threat after a ruling on Thursday that defers their approval until further notice. ICANN has ruled that applications for ‘closed generic’ gTLDs – dictionary words not available for public use – must be discussed further with the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC). “The NGPC [New gTLD Program Committee] directs staff to defer moving forward with the contracting process for applicants seeking to impose exclusive registry access for ‘generic strings’ to a single person or entity”, a statement says. XO Group Uses Cloud Services to Control Dropbox Rogues

Until last year, when XO Group employees wanted to share information or access it remotely, they usually bypassed IT and simply opened up a personal Dropbox account. While this step allowed them to access files anywhere and collaborate with colleagues, it also decreased corporate security, centralization, and IT control. Recognizing IT had to find a solution that met business and IT needs, XO Group began researching its options, said Tony Colon, director of IT, in an interview with Internet Evolution. XO Group, formerly The Knot, operates “life stage websites” focused…

Hackers attack 90,000 WordPress blogs

Keeping the default settings on any Internet-connected service is just asking for trouble. It’s easy enough to scoff at people whose brilliant “12345” password fell victim to hackers, but it’s just as simple to target usernames. A number of WordPress bloggers discovered this the hard way, when their “admin” accounts became part of a hostile, exploitative botnet. The attacks began last week, and have affected more than 90,000 blogs so far. The hackers behind the attacks have combed through WordPress accounts and attempted to guess passwords via brute force.
