Digital transformation sets tech firms as agents of change

IT has moved from the basement to the boardroom, and is now a strategic part of every company’s business. Whether it’s the internet of things (IoT), cloud computing, mobility, big data, analytics or something else, there is always a new technology for technology firms and chief digital information officers (CDIO) to grapple with.

With digital technologies proliferating and advancing at a rapid clip, it is important to consider the role of the chief digital information officers in leading change. The rapidly evolving digital landscape has opened up a significant new role for CIOs.

The pace of change in IT ( digital transformation) over the last decade has increased, and as Cisco pointed out at this year’s Cisco Live event in Las Vegas, IT departments risk being left behind if they can’t keep up with business demands. Cisco, of course, presented this as an opportunity, a chance for IT departments to lead the changes that can increase productivity and drive revenue growth.
While it is clear that digital technology will transform most industries, there are a number of challenges that need to be understood. These include factors such as the pace of changing customer expectations, cultural transformation, outdated regulation, and identifying and accessing the right skills. These challenges need to be addressed by industry and government leaders to unlock the substantial benefits digital offers society and industry.
