There will be 4.1 billion internet users by  the year 2020, the Cisco Visual Networking Index Complete Forecast for 2015 to 2020 has revealed. As aptantech reports, the forecast predicted that there would be 1 billion internet users who would join the global Internet community by 2020 and that global IP traffic would nearly triple at a compound annual growth rate of 22% over the next five years.

The traffic growth will be impacted by the gloal digitization transformation which is based on the adoption of personal devices and the deployment of machine-to-machine (M2M) connections. The global IP networks will support up to 10 billion new devices and connections over the next year causing the number to increase frm 16.3 billion in 2015 to 26.3 billion by 2020.

Another factor driving IP traffic and the growth in the market is the advancements being made in the Internet of Things. Internet of Things devices such as video surveillance applications, smart meters, digital health monitors et.al. are increasing traffic and creating new network requirements. By 2020, the M2M connections are projected to grow from 4.9 billion in 2015 to 12.2 billion in 2020. Additionally, the connected health consumer segment will have the largest volume of M2M connections at 5.8 billion in 2020 which will have grown from 2.4 in 2015.

When it comes to video, the Cisco VNI predicts that Internet video will account for 79% of all global traffic by 202 which will have increased from 63% in 2015. While all these projections are happening, security remains the major concern for service providers, governments, businesses and consumers.
