The public libraries in Kenya will start offering free Internet to over half a million library members from June, ItNewsAfrica reports. The Internet will be provided by Liquid Telecom Kenya and the Communications Authority of Kenya who will connect 46 branches of the Kenya National Libraries Services.

Mr. Ben Roberts, the CEO of Liquid Telecom Kenya said,

“The demand for Internet services is growing exponentially in Kenya. Connecting the public libraries means everybody will now have access to digital and online information – including e-government services, research, education services and employment opportunities,”

The 46 branches  in 29 counties have been also been equipped with additional 11 computers. Library members who gain admittance for Ksh20 per visit for adults and free admittance for children under 14 years will gain access to fixed and wireless Internet either on the libraries’ computers or on their own devices. Mr. Roberts continued to say that with the Communications Authority serving as the main financier of the project, they have been ale to connect public libraries even in the most remote areas with high quality connections.

The ICT manager for Kenya National Library Services said that the decision to connect the library branches came from the increasing need for digital content by the library users and that the partnership would provide great benefits to the libraries’ users. As a safety measure, separate content will be availed to adults and children.
