Dell Unveils the World’s First 32-Inch 8K Monitor

Dell has unveiled some impressive new monitors for its products. At the start of the year, the 2017 lineup included new Infinity Edge displays, HDR displays, a new touchscreen display, and even the world’s first 32-inch, 8K monitor.

Dell has now released the UP2718Q monitor, which offers a A 27” 3840 x 2160 resolution with the all trendy trick for 2017, HDR. The UP2718Q is making use of an IPS panel (AHVA) at 6-hz, and thus offers support for HDR10.   This is a stunning panel for people who do a particular kind of work in photo or video editing. It boasts full coverage of the SRGB, Adobe RGB, and Rec. 709 gamuts, and 98% of the DCI-P3 professional gamut. 8K support is only driven via 2x DisplayPort 1.4 ports (making this explicitly an MST product) and its maximum brightness of 400 nits is fairly standard for the industry as well.

The 31.5-inch Dell UP3218K might seem slightly more roomy. But remember — stepping from 4K to 8K quadruples pixel counts, it doesn’t double them. Icons and images designed for a 32-inch 1080p display will be 1/16th original size on an 8K panel. Even Microsoft’s font scaling options baked into Windows 10 won’t keep up with that issue.

Dell claims the UltraSharp 8K will hit 100 percent of the Adobe RGB and sRGB gamuts right out of the box, and feature a 7680 x 4320 resolution, dwarfing even the largest 4K monitor in its existing lineup. It’s big, sharp, and very bright. With a reported contrast ratio of 1,300-to-1, and a max brightness of 400 lux, the UP3218K has the makings of an incredibly impressive monitor, and it should for that price.

Additionally, the UP3218K features a standard array of connections and ports, offering four USB 3.0 ports, two DisplayPort 1.3 ports, and an audio line out, but no HDMI support.
