Apple’s next iPhone may come with wireless charging

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that Apple is developing wireless charging features for three new iPhones coming in 2017.

Apple is reportedly working on over-the-air charging, a function that would allow a device to charge without needing to be directly connected to anything.

The company already uses wireless charging for the Apple Watch, but it is still unknown how Apple plans to implement wireless charging in the iPhone.

Kuo doesn’t say exactly how Apple plans to implement wireless charging. The company already uses wireless charging for the Apple Watch, so it’s very possible we’ll end up seeing something similar to that — it’s the kind of wireless charging we’ve seen on Android phones for years. But Bloomberg reported last year that Apple is working on “cutting-edge” wireless charging tech that may be able to power devices at a distance, so there’s some possibility Apple is looking to do more.

According to CQ , the management said the wireless charging would increase the internal temperature of the phones, therefore the forthcoming iPhone would have to use a new hardware component to protect the unit from overheating.

“While we don’t expect general users to notice any difference, lamination of an additional graphite sheet is needed for better thermal control and, thus, steady operation; this is because FPCB is replaced with film, which is more sensitive to temperature change of the 3D touch sensor in OLED iPhone,” Kuo wrote in his research note.
